What Is Stone Veneer? A Guide to Flexible Natural Stone Veneer

What Is Stone Veneer? A Guide to Flexible Natural Stone Veneer

Stone veneer is a thin layer of real natural stone that provides the colour, texture and character of traditional stone in a much thinner and lighter format. Unlike imitation stone-effect panels, natural stone veneer has a genuine stone surface, meaning every sheet has its own unique variations in colour, pattern and texture.

Its lightweight and flexible construction makes stone veneer suitable for a wide range of residential and commercial projects, including feature walls, kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, furniture, curved surfaces and selected exterior applications.

Is Stone Veneer Real Stone?

Yes. Natural stone veneer has a genuine natural stone surface.

The stone is separated into a very thin layer and reinforced with a backing, creating a sheet that retains the natural appearance and texture of stone without the thickness and weight of a conventional stone tile or slab.

Because the surface is natural, no two sheets are identical. Colours, markings and textures vary from sheet to sheet, giving each installation its own individual character.

How Is Flexible Stone Veneer Made?

Lite Stone slate and stone veneer consists of a thin layer of natural stone supported by a reinforced backing made using fibreglass mesh, cotton and polymer resin.

The backing supports the thin stone surface while allowing the finished sheet to remain lightweight, durable and flexible.

This construction makes it possible to use genuine natural stone in applications where the weight or thickness of conventional stone tiles and slabs could make installation more difficult.

How Thick and Heavy Is Stone Veneer?

Lite Stone veneer sheets are typically between 1.5mm and 3mm thick, depending on the type of natural stone.

A standard 122 x 61cm sheet weighs approximately 1.5–2kg.

The thin and lightweight construction makes the sheets easier to handle and allows natural stone to be used on walls, furniture and other surfaces without the bulk associated with traditional stone.

Why Is Stone Veneer Flexible?

The flexibility comes from combining a very thin layer of natural stone with a reinforced resin backing.

This allows the veneer to bend to follow gently curved surfaces. For tighter curves, the resin backing can be gently warmed with a heat gun to make the sheet more malleable before installation.

This flexibility opens up possibilities that can be difficult to achieve using rigid stone tiles or slabs, including curved walls, columns, furniture and other shaped surfaces.

Where Can Stone Veneer Be Used?

Stone veneer can be used for many residential and commercial applications, including feature walls, kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, furniture, wall cladding and selected flooring applications.

Its thin construction can also make it useful for renovation projects where adding the thickness and weight of conventional stone may be impractical.

The suitability of a particular veneer will depend on the type of stone and where it is being installed, so it is important to choose the correct material, adhesive and sealer for the application.

Can Stone Veneer Be Used in Bathrooms and Showers?

Yes. Suitable slate veneer can be used in bathrooms, shower enclosures and wet rooms.

In shower and wet-room applications, the area should be properly tanked and waterproofed before the veneer is installed. A suitable hybrid polymer or epoxy resin-based adhesive should be used, and the natural stone surface should be properly sealed to provide additional protection in wet areas.

Can Stone Veneer Be Used Outside?

Some stone veneers can be used externally, but not every material in the Lite Stone range is suitable for exterior applications.

Our slate veneer can be used on external feature walls when installed onto a suitable level substrate, such as an exterior-grade cement board. We do not recommend our marble, limestone, metal or concrete veneers for exterior use.

Exterior slate veneer should also be appropriately sealed after installation.

Always check that the particular material you are considering is suitable for exterior use before installation.

Can Stone Veneer Be Used Around a Fireplace?

Yes. Our slate and stone veneer is heat resistant up to 120°C and has achieved a Cfl-s1 fire classification.

It can therefore be used for suitable fireplace applications where the surface temperature does not exceed 120°C.

As with any installation involving a heat source, the application and expected surface temperature should be considered before choosing the material.

How Do You Cut and Install Stone Veneer?

Slate and stone veneer sheets can be cut using tools such as an angle grinder with a suitable tile blade, multi-tool or tile saw.

Installation normally involves preparing a clean, dry and level substrate, arranging the sheets to achieve a pleasing natural variation, cutting them to size and bonding them using an appropriate adhesive.

The exact installation method depends on the material and application, particularly for wet areas, exterior installations and translucent stone.

For detailed instructions, see our Stone Veneer Installation Guide.

What Sizes Are Stone Veneer Sheets?

Our main range of slate and stone veneer is available in two sheet sizes:

122 x 61cm standard sheets

240 x 120cm jumbo sheets

Availability can vary depending on the particular material.

The larger jumbo sheets can be especially useful for covering substantial areas with fewer joints, while standard sheets can be easier to handle for smaller projects and detailed installations.

Stone Veneer vs Traditional Stone

Both natural stone veneer and traditional stone provide the appearance and variation of genuine stone, but their construction is very different.

Traditional stone tiles and slabs are generally much thicker, heavier and more rigid. Stone veneer uses a thin natural stone surface supported by a reinforced backing, significantly reducing its thickness and weight.

Stone veneer can also flex, making it possible to cover some curved and shaped surfaces that would be difficult to clad using conventional rigid stone.

The best choice depends on the project. Traditional stone may be preferable where a substantial solid stone construction is required, while stone veneer can be particularly useful where low weight, minimal thickness and flexibility are important.

Is Stone Veneer the Same as Stone-Effect Panels?

No. Natural stone veneer should not be confused with products that simply reproduce the appearance of stone using printed, moulded or manufactured surfaces.

The visible surface of Lite Stone natural stone veneer is genuine stone. This means the variations in colour, markings and texture are created naturally rather than being a repeating printed pattern.

These natural variations are an important part of the character of the material.

How Do You Choose the Right Stone Veneer?

Start by considering where the material will be installed and the appearance you want to achieve.

Different natural stones have different colours, markings and characteristics, and not every material is suitable for every application. Exterior walls, wet areas, floors, fireplaces and backlit installations all have their own requirements.

It is also worth considering the surrounding colours, lighting and other materials in the room. Because natural stone varies from sheet to sheet, viewing the material itself can be particularly helpful when making a decision.

Samples of our materials can be ordered before committing to a larger project, allowing you to see the natural colour, texture and finish in person.
